“And it was exhausting,
trying to survive you.
But I did.”
This battlefield, lit only by the full moon above me, was still something I wished I could erase from my memory. Blood was scattered all around me. Mine. Evidence of the carnage left in your wake. I didn’t need to look for bodies, because this war was mine to fight. And it was exhausting, trying to survive you. A scream tore out of me, cutting through the night like a blade. But I did it. You were defeated, my demon. Slain in the dead of night. At last, I’d won my freedom.
I won my freedom from my abuser. The battlefield was my body, and though the marks remain, the war is over on the outside. The inside, however, is another story entirely. Victims of abuse often spend a lifetime trying to adapt to learn how to live again. Empower them. Never tear them down.
