I am survival
etched on my skin
in black ink
pierced through my cartilage
and lobes with silver rings and studs
I am survival
knit into my scalp
under salt and pepper hair
cropped close
when I decided I was more
than long curly locks
no one’s eye candy
I am survival
visible in the faint half-moon
scar that circles my throat
and the other that
plays connect-the-dots
between my pelvic bones
because square pegs
do not always come out
of round holes
and motherhood is not
for the faint of heart
I am survival
see the fine lines that
starburst from the corners
of my eyes
drawn by laughter
and steely determination
declaring that I am no longer
a mere girl
but a woman grown
and I have lived
I am survival
when I clutch my pen
in aching hands
ignoring the pain in each knuckle
and cut the silence in two
with its sharp tip
and refuse to put my truths
back in the locked box
for other people’s comfort
I am
my own

Thank you Bob. I had something completely different in mind but once I wrote “I am survival” the path was chosen.

as it has to a certain extent pushed some other contributors to have a deeper self reflection, I am quite surprised at the response, still have a few more to reblog at the GDG but giving space for the Thursday traffic first. Yours was truly exceptional. thank you!

Surviving, is merely defining ourselves, based off of our own beliefs of who we are, and not allowing anybody else’s opinions of us, to affect how we feel, tuning the rest of the world out…

I think survival is more active than that. It is honoring ourselves and our resilience. It is not forgetting our past but also not being defined by it. It is both self-acceptance and striving.

C, C, C! You make me gnash my teeth reading your work (this is a GOOD thing) I FEEL so much reading your work. Rather than blithering on I want to quote all of it but this is the sublime part I decided to select as my favorite;
because square pegs
do not always come out
of round holes
and motherhood is not
for the faint of heart
I am survival
see the fine lines that
starburst from the corners
of my eyes
